Kindness and Help From a Total Stranger, Laura L. Morris from Ebby Halliday Realtors

You never know when you need help.  Oftentimes, days like that come as a surprise.  Today was no different.  I needed help.  In the middle of the street, my car came to a stop.

Before my car came to a stop, I was on my way to get gas.  Since I was not familiar at all with the surroundings, I was driving around looking for a gas station.  While I was wondering where the closest gas station might be in that area, I took a guess and went into the left lane for a left turn.  Suddenly, my car came to a stop.

I called home for help.  My family was at least 30 minutes away from where I was stuck.  I gave a detailed description and information about where I was to my family so they could come help me.

I didn't want to sit in my car and wait inside with all those other cars going by so fast around me.  So, I got out and walked over to the sidewalk and waited there.  It was getting dark.  I sat and listened to my MP3 player to keep me company while I was waiting for help.

I left the emergency lights blinking so others could see there is a car that cannot go in front of them.  Interestingly, some cars drove up straight to the back of my car and stopped.  The traffic light was green.  I looked at the drivers.  They were on the phone.

Then a car drove by and the driver asked if I needed help.  I told him that my family was on their way.  I thanked him.  He smiled, knodded and drove away.  I sat and continued waiting, while listening to my MP3.

It was getting darker and darker, while I was waiting for my family.  Then in the dark, I heard someone ask, "Do you need help?"

I smiled and saw the woman who asked, and told her that I was okay and that my family was on their way.

Instead of driving away, she asked again, "What's wrong with your car?"

I replied, "I think it's out of gas."

She was three lanes away from where I was.  She continued asking, "Do you want me to get you some gas and see if that's the problem?"

Hmm... That made sense.  What if gas was not the issue?  "Can you do that?  Would you mind?" I replied.

"Sure.  Let me go get you $5 gas." She said.

"No, just $2 will be do." I replied.

"OK.  I'll be back," she said as she drove off and made a right turn.  I noticed down the block to the right, there was a gas station.  So I continued to wait.

A police car drove by on the opposite side of the street but kept driving away.

I continued waiting.  About 10 minutes went by.  I then saw a police car with lights flashing coming up behind my car.

I stood up, smiling and thanked the officer for his help.  He asked me what was the problem.  I told him that I think my car ran out of gas.  He asked me for my key to try and see if it was out of gas.  I gave him my key to the car.  He turned the engine on and right away, it stopped.  He came back and said that it looked like the car was out of gas.  He asked me if I wanted it towed.  I told him that a lady was getting gas and would be back soon.  He said that I had 10 minutes and he would call the tow truck.  5 to 8 minutes went by.  The police officer said he was going to call the tow truck in a few minutes if the lady was not back by then.

Then suddenly, I recognized the car that drove up and the woman who asked to help me.  She was back!  She turned on her blinkers and pulled up into the parking lot on the right, behind me.

She came out, nice and calm and asked me to hold her car keys.  In her hand was this big red plastic container.  I opened my gas tank.  She started pouring gas in my tank.  I thanked her.  She said to me, "No problem, we ladies have to help each other."  I was so happy for her help.

I asked her for her number or some kind of information so I could thank her later.  She pulled out a business card and handed it to me.

She poured about half the container. Stopped and gave me instruction on how to pump the gas 3 to 4 times.  She then further explained how I needed to hold the gas pedal while I turned on the key.  The car made some noise, turned on , but turned off again.  Oh, I thought gas might not be the issue.

"No, let me put some more gas in the car.  I think it is gas."  She said.  She continued putting gas in the car.  It looked like it had about 1/4 of the container to go.

The police officer said, "Why not turn the container upside down so the gas comes out faster."

She said okay and turned it upside down. The gas did come out faster but all of a sudden, it poured out and went all over her hand and some got on her clothes.  She turned the container back the other way again.  She was pouring it out correctly.  The officer's recommendation didn't work.

She told me that she took a while because she had to go buy the container.  She didn't have one with her.  I asked her how much did she pay for it.  I could see the price tag still taped to the container.  She said it was $15, but not to worry about it.

We tested the car again.  This time, the car came on.  She told me the car took a little time to take in the gas.

Since the officer was there, she quickly waved at me to go.  I got some money out of my pocketbook for her.  She wouldn't take it.  She continued to wave at me to go because the officer was standing there. Oviously, he wanted my car off the spot because it was blocking traffic.  He was doing his job.

I quickly drove off and drove up to the gas station that was down the block.  I wished I had seen it earlier.  I wouldn't have run out of gas.

While I was getting gas, I looked at the business card that she gave me. It has a very nice picture with her name, Laura L. Morris, ABR, e-PRO Realtor, from Ebby Halliday Realtors at Ebby.com.   I continued to look to see if there is any contact information so I could thank her.  I saw the website at www.LauraMorrisHomes.com.

Ah, yes, I will contact her.  You're going to meet her.  She'll be invited to our meetings and events and come anytime she wishes.  She will have that spotlight on stage at our monthly PR Networking Event with our news media speakers.  She can attend any time, no meeting fee, to any one of our Business, Entrepreneur, Internet, Marketing, PR, Organizer, VIP meetings and events.

Laura has been the angel that was sent to me, as God knows that the officer was going to come by and wanted to tow my car away.  Laura was the angel, no doubt, sent to me just before the officer came.

Sometimes, many things we do in life, we don't know why.  We complain and complain that all these things we do, no one cares.  I have to take back this one thought that I have been telling my Business Coach, Mike Crow, about.  I said, "You know, Mike, for many years I have helped so many people and for these past 6 years I helped so many people in my ten groups of 3,800+- members with 10 +/- meetings and events every month all over DFW.

I was even told by several people that I have helped launch so many people and their businesses."  I was told by those close to me that no one has come back to thank me.  Still, I continue to do what I enjoy doing most - helping others.

Even though I was told that I was wasting my time, I continue to help others.  Even just this past Monday, on my recorded camera, at my Marketing event, I continue to choose to help because there is always a new group of people needing help.

Six years ago, one of my husband's friends invited us to have dinner with his family.  He was questioning me why I kept doing what I do for people.  I replied to him, "It's my passion."  He kept asking me the same old questions, "Why?"  I kept replying, "It's my passion."

When I was teaching at my church (10 years, every week back then), I was telling the little children that we are saving in God's piggy bank with our names on it.  "Every single little good thing you do is saved up in the piggy bank.  Depends on the size of the good thing that you do, it's like the quarters and dimes, sometimes like a dollar bill, they're saved up in the piggy bank.  They all get saved up inside the piggy bank and some even earn interest, like a bank.

Today, I learned, not to give up what I enjoy doing most.  I learned to continue to help others no matter what others say to me.  You know, as people always say, it always comes back to you from someone else.

Oh, as I was just finishing this sentence, I just heard my favorite bird chirping outside my window, for the first time since the winter has started a few months ago.

It's a fresh beginning again.  I thank Laura very much for helping me.  She is the savings in the piggy bank that came back to me when I needed help.  What she did was not only a big help for me, but I know someday if she needs help, she will have my blessing from my prayers for her.

Thank you, Laura.
